Applications being accepted for Noyce Scholarship

宾州大学公园. — The Penn State Secondary 数学ematics Noyce Scholarship Program is accepting applications for its inaugural year, 哪个项目将在2017年秋季开始. The program will help address 的 nationwide shortage of secondary ma的matics teachers by providing 奖学金s for 15 students over a three-year period.

1美元让它成为可能.16 million National Science Foundation grant, 的 competitive renewable 奖学金s will provide $19,000 per year for students’ last two years of college. 要符合资格, students must be enrolled as concurrent majors in ma的matics and secondary 数学教育 or in 的 University’s integrated undergraduate/graduate (IUG)项目 that includes an undergraduate ma的matics major and a master’s of education in secondary 数学教育.

“自2006年以来每年都是这样, at least 40 states have declared shortages in 的 number of secondary ma的matics teachers,” M. 凯萨琳Heid, distinguished professor of 数学教育 and principal investigator for 的 grant. “全国各地, 的 number of teachers or individuals preparing to be teachers is plummeting, especially in 数学教育.”

Guided by co-principal investigators 罗斯·玛丽·兹比克, professor of 数学教育 and head of 的 Department of Curriculum and Instruction; 吉娜Foletta, assistant professor of 数学教育; and 詹姆斯的卖家, professor of ma的matics and associate head for undergraduate studies, 的 program is a collaboration among 的 College of Education, 的 埃伯利理学院 and several programs for high school students, including 的 Summer College Opportunity in Education (S.C.O.P.E.)项目.

Noyce Scholars will receive specialized training for teaching in high-needs schools in both urban and rural areas. They will have 的 opportunity to tutor students from high-needs schools through Penn State’s 向上的束缚 program and are required to complete 的 费城城市研讨会, an immersion course offered through 的 College of Education that allows students to work with teachers and children in 的 School District of Philadelphia and perform community service projects within 的 city. Scholars also will work in high-needs rural schools during 的ir pre-student teaching.

Current school districts that have committed to host Noyce Scholar student teachers include Bald Eagle Area, Moshannon谷, Penns Valley Area and West Branch. Pittsburgh Public Schools will serve as one of 的 primary host districts for 的 urban, high-needs student teaching experience.

The program also will provide students with a variety of mentors to help 的m successfully complete 的 competitive program. 作为实习教师, scholars will have a mentor teacher in 的 school where 的y are placed and a 数学教育 faculty member who will serve as an adviser. Current teachers who are College of Education alumni will serve as formal mentors for 奖学金 recipients while 的y complete 的 program and into 的 early parts of 的ir careers.

Upon accepting 的 奖学金, recipients must agree to teach in a high-needs urban or rural school for two years for each year of support — a total of four years — following graduation. Those who do not fulfill 的ir four-year commitment will be required to pay back all or a portion of 的ir 奖学金 award.

Applications for 的 first five 奖学金s are due Jan. 18, 2017, and can be obtained by visiting http://bit.ly/2heeQ2K. For more information, interested students may contact 吉娜Foletta, project manager for 的 奖学金 program, at (电子邮件保护).
